Open Studios & Special Drinks
On Thursday, August 18, starting at 7 pm, we want to celebrate with you! Together with the resident artists Mohamed Harb, Mia Sanchez and Gaia Del Santo, and our partners Pro Helvetia – Swiss Arts Council and Sonnenstube Offspace we invite you to a small garden party with open studios, snacks, and special drinks.
In mid-June, Zurich-based artist Gaia Del Santo moved in with us shortly after completing the BA Fine Arts program at the ZHdK. Gaia’s work centers around the becoming of Extremely Online people and the Young-Girl as the ideal consumer model. Through textile, sculpture, and video, she explores the pervasiveness of networked spaces and the effects of the constant self-mythologizing on social media. Gaia’s invitation is the result of an open call to all Swiss art schools. >
Lago Mio is a partner residency of the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia. Since the beginning of July, we have been hosting Mohamed Harb (who lives and works in Gaza), the first Palestinian guest artist of Pro Helvetia in Switzerland. Mohamed is a painter, photographer, video artist, and documentary filmmaker. His short and feature films have been honored at various festivals, such as the Cannes Film Festival in the Palestinian Showcase. >
Until 21 August 2022, we are hosting Basel-based artist MIA SANCHEZ as part of SouvenirSouvenir, curated by SONNENSTUBE Offspace. The program of micro-residencies runs between April and September 2022 as an extended invitation to all participants of this year's Swiss Art Awards – to explore the potential of Ticino, to get in contact with the local social fabric, to promote the building of networks for cultural exchange across borders. At the Open Studios, Mia and Sonnenstube will serve a joint Special Cocktail! >

BYOB IS DYI: The acronym BYOB usually stands for "bring your own bottle" on invitations and appeals to the self-initiative of the invited guests. Accordingly, artists are concerned for the material needed to present their work themselves. In the TransBona hall, we provide a basic structure of projection surfaces that can be used in collaboration with the curator and the technical team, as well as in mindful neighborliness with the other artists. BYOB IS OPEN TO ALL possible artistic approaches. In view of the limited space, a selection is required.
Participation is rewarded with 250 CHF.
Initiated by artist Rafaël Rozendaal (*1980, lives and works in New York), the open-source exhibition format BYOB (Bring Your Own Beamer) is dedicated to experimenting with video projection. Since 2010 (premiere in Berlin), hundreds of BYOB events have been realized worldwide to date. In 2013, the HEK organized the first BYOB in German-speaking Switzerland in its future museum premises. Because Basel's Dreispitz site is in permanent transformation, BYOB Basel 2022 will take place in the TransBona Hall, fittingly across from the construction site of the future Kunsthaus Baselland. byobworldwide.com/

Den m2act-Kickoff veranstalten wir zusammen mit den Macher*innen der KOKON – digitale Fachkonferenz für Ko-Kreation. Lago Mio – We need help !
[EN] In the heart of Lugano we have opened the artist residence Lago Mio, a large apartment with a magnificent mountain and lake panorama – big enough for three artists to stay, work and exhibit. These artists – Chika Anadu (Nigeria), Zayne Armstrong (US) & Tobias Madison (CH) from London, Berlin & New York – are working on three different film projects, all of which have a certain social commitment. The Città di Lugano pays the very high cost of living in Lugano. With a Crowdfunding-campaign, we want to raise the second part of the needed money with the help of interested people. We will invest the required CHF 7,000 in filming costs, the production of the closing exhibition (on Friday, 25 October 2019) and the development of a book with video app.
Crowdfunding is a very reasonable way of raising funds – especially in the arts, which, as is well known, does not appeal to everyone equally. This is where those pay who consider their support valuable. In addition, Lago Mio, as the initiator, returns adequate consideration for your support. On Thursday, Bogotá art space CRISPR (calle 51a # 5 - 63) will open its doors for the launch of the book «Space Agency by Juice & Rispetta», edited by Jardín publicaciones and Juan Sebastián Rosillo R. «Space Agency», presented at this year's I Never Read Art Book Fair Basel, was created as a result of a 4-day performance carried out by Olivier Rossel, Johannes Willi, and Benedikt Wyss from 25–28 October, 2018, within the framework of the program Odeón Intensivo at Espacio Odéon Bogotá. Lago Mio getting started
Lago Mio vitalized! Last night Chika Anadu, the first artist, moved into her summer residence, and Tobias Madison follows as soon as possible. Furthermore, we are pleased to announce the move in of a third artist: After enlarging the premises of Lago Mio, we invited Zayne Armstrong, an EU based, American-born filmmaker, to join the residency. Convinced that Zayne’s practices and research into pedagogy and the ethics of consent to observe will greatly enrich the artistic community of Lago Mio, we are delighted to welcoming him soon to Lugano for the summer. The opening date of the exhibition has meanwhile been postponed. Most likely we will open on the weekend 25/26 October, 2019 – to have more time for the processing of film footage created here.

Chika Anadu & Tobias Madison at Lago Mio in summer 2019
In March, Lago Mio was inaugurated by artist Johannes Willi, and from July the new residency in the old town of Lugano will open its doors to the next guests. After extensive discussions of the 112 applications, the Jury (Elise Lammer, Giovanna Silva, Benedikt Wyss) decided to invite London-based Nigerian filmmaker Chika Anadu, and Swiss artist Tobias Madison, who currently lives in New York. We chose two artists who will hopefully enrich each other through their practices in socially-engaged filmmaking. The resulting exhibition will take place at the beginning of September. LAGO MIO summer residency – Call for artists
LAGO MIO Lugano is looking for visual artists for its summer residency in July/August 2019.
The lake view residence above the roofs of the old town comprises ten rooms on 200 m2. In addition to the free stay, we plan to provide CHF 1’000/month/artist, a production budget, travel expenses, and personal support. We are in the process of raising funds and will be able to provide more detailed information on the level of support by the application deadline. The jury will be announced at the beginning of April. It selects two artists who live and work at LAGO MIO. The residency ends with a curated closing exhibition. The projects presented at the Open House embody organs and apparatuses. As fictional machines, they represent the productive similarities of a functioning body. This network is only partially based on the human physique, acting as a collection of products without coherent roots, and more or less clearly defined functions for the formation of a decentralized and unpredictable acting design.
The corridor of the Institute HyperWerk becomes a bloodline, a transport for people and ideas. It connects the apparatuses and organs, while simultaneously acting as an escape route from the crowd.

Ciao Vernissage!
Hallo Ausstellung! Die Videoausstellung «68–88–18. Freiraum in Basel. Filme und Videos» an der Webergasse 34 unweit der Kaserne Basel eröffnete am Freitagabend fulminant. Trotz (oder dank?) frühlingshafter Temperaturen fanden 568 Besuchende den Weg in die umfassende, fünfzig Jahre, fünfzig Räume und 850 m2 umfassende Videoschau.
Die Ausstellung ist reich befrachtet und für manch eine/n wohl erstmal überwältigend (-fordernd), lässt aber durch einen klaren chronologischen Erzählfaden leicht (nach Bedarf auch gezielt) abtauchen in fünfzig bewegte Jahre jüngerer Stadtgeschichte. Sie lädt – mit ihren diversen Perspektiven auf ein sehr subjektives Thema – zu mehrmeligem Besuch ein.
«68–88–18» hat eine Geschichte geschrieben. Nun lädt sie ihre Besuchenden ein, diese Geschichte weiter zu schreiben. Was ist Freiraum? Die Diskussion ist lanciert.
Die Ausstellung läuft bis zum 27. Mai. Auf der Webseite finden Sie das aktualisierte Vermittlungsprogramm.
Das nächste Projekt von Benedikt Wyss folgt im Juli 2018: WATER YUMP, in Zusammenarbeit mit dem deutschen Künstler Thomas Geiger, eine Austellung im Basler Rhein.

Anfang 2018 sollte ein Debattier-Marathon im Schiffbau die Streitlust in der Zwinglistadt entfachen. Die an die «Disputationes» von 1523 angelehnte Veranstaltung namens Meet Your Enemy sah vor, das Publikum zum Akteur zu machen und in freiwillige Streitgespräche zu verwickeln. Aber die Zürcher wollten nicht streiten, die Veranstaltung wurde abgesagt.
Auch der Social Muscle Club will nicht streiten. Gleichwohl ist für ihn der Titel Meet Your Enemy eine Steilvorlage. Seit seiner Gründung in einem Berliner Wohnzimmer im Sommer 2012 feiert er sich als Spielplatz des subversiv Sozialen. Eine Mischung aus Happening, Fest und sozialer Plastik, ist der Social Muscle Club der Ort, an dem sich Kunst und Anti-Kunst verschwören. Hier wird gegessen, geschenkt und überschäumt, Junge verlieben sich in Alte, das Asoziale verbrüdert sich mit dem Sozialen, relationale Kunst trifft auf immersives Theater, das Affektierte auf Poesie.
Mittlerweile ist der Social Muscle Club in Athen, Bristol, Johannesburg, Kapstadt, Marseille, München, Nancy, Wien oder Zagreb aktiv. In Basel hat ein Team bis heute neun ausverkaufte Schweizer Abende veranstaltet – in der Markthalle, im Grand Hotel, im Altersheim, in der Kunsthalle, der Kirche, der Kaserne, am Theaterfestival, im Flüchtlingstreff und im Fitnessclub.

Umwelt Mode is a collaborative exhibition taking place at Clarastrasse 13, a gutted building formerly occupied by a generic clothing store. The project proposes that the venue is still haunted by the spirit of cheap fashion. Umwelt Mode will bring together a number of project spaces who have been invited for their established interest in the fashion/art nexus. They in turn will invite artists, whose works will range from objects to performance – paintings, garments, structural interventions, runway presentations – making the exhibition a bridge between the constructed fantasy of the fashion industry and the lived vernacular of daily dressing. Umwelt Mode follows on Jeppe’s Unsere Umwelt underground gallery, produced in Basel last year as part of Wyss’ Haus#99 teardown residency.

Basler Fasnacht – Feldexperimente. Perspektiven auf einen Freiraum. Vernissage: 7. April 2017, 17 Uhr

Heutzutage treten zeitgenössische Künstlerinnen und Künstler an der Basler Fasnacht kaum in Erscheinung. Im Gegensatz etwa zu den 70er-Jahren, sagt man – mit dem Höhepunkt, dass Jean Tinguely 1974 im Kampf für die wilde Fasnacht das Fasnachts-Comité auf dem Marktplatz mit Russ und Federn sinnbildlich in die Luft jagte. Sodeli! Kunst- und Fasnachtszene sollen damals nicht die heutigen Berührungsängste gekannt haben.
Die Ausstellung Feldexperimente: Basler Fasnacht untersucht das Potential einer Fasnacht, die trotz ihrer Codiertheit einen einzigartigen Freiraum darstellt. Womit auch die Hoffnung verbunden ist, als längerfristiges Projekt die Kunst wieder näher an die Basler Fasnacht zu rücken. Was soll, kann, darf, ja muss so eine Fasnacht? Sieben Künstlerinnen und Künstler besuchten die diesjährige Fasnacht, um ihre persönlichen Antworten zu suchen. Ihre Experimente haben sie in Arbeiten übersetzt, die in der Ausstellung mit bestehenden Werken kombiniert werden. Ergänzt wird die Anordnung durch originale Artefakte, Bilder und Fotografien der seit den 70er-Jahren die Grenzen der Narrenfreiheit suchenden Traditionsclique Alti Stainlemer und eben der Kuttlebutzer, die über Jahrzehnte für eine freie und wilde Fasnacht kämpfte.
Essays von Naomi Gregoris, Salome Hofer, Pia Inderbitzin, Michelle Steinbeck, Michael Luisier, Thilo Mangold, Michel Massmünster, Thierry Moosbrugger, Boris Nikitin und Lucien Stöcklin begleiten die Ausstellung. Am 7. April eröffnet sie mit Überraschungsgästen.

Nachdem das Festival 2013 die Grenzen zwischen Realität und Fälschung und 2015 die Inszenierung von Öffentlichkeit verhandelte, heisst es dieses Jahr Manege frei für den dunklen Clown des Dokumentarischen: die Satire. Eigentlich eine Kunstform, welche die Wirklichkeit verspottet, scheint sie derzeit das Paradigma der Gegenwart zu sein. Denn Satire, das ist die stete Simulation der Krise, stellt sie doch die Wirklichkeit nicht einfach dar, sondern übertreibt, polemisiert, karikiert, irritiert und verschiebt die Grenzen des Vertretbaren oder löst sie komplett auf. Sie ist das Dokumentarische im Fieberzustand. Satire spielt die Wirklichkeit als Spiel. Dabei testet sie nicht nur die Vorstellungen dessen, was als wahr oder wertvoll gilt, sondern auch die Mittel, mit denen wir diese tagtäglich auszudrücken versuchen. Ihr Modus ist die Grenzüberschreitung. It’s The Real Thing begibt sich 2017 dorthin, wo die Zeichen sich ihren eindeutigen Zuschreibungen entziehen, ihre Bedeutungen zum Schillern gebracht werden, wo zwischen E und U alles unklar und von einer fröhlichen Ironie ist, wo man nicht mehr weiss, ob man das darf oder nicht darf, ob etwas korrekt oder unkorrekt ist und wo im Sumpf zwischen Trash und Glamour eines der rätselhaftesten Konzepte aufscheint, welche die Kommunikation hervorgebracht hat: die Idee der menschlichen Freiheit.

Diesen Freitag: Im Taumel der Museumsnacht
Deli Projects hat das Ausstellungsprojekt Im Taumel der Nacht mit dem Projektraum Trikot auf Einladung der Museumsnacht Basel entwickelt. Skulpturen von Christopher Füllemann sind ab Freitag, 20. Januar (Museumsnacht) im Trikot und im Hof der Kaserne zu sehen (bis 5.2.). Von der Quartierbeiz Concordia (vis-à-vis des Trikot) zur Kaserne führen Nachtrundgänge des Kulturanthropologen Michel Massmünster, dessen Doktorarbeit sich für das vielfältige Erfahren der Nacht interessiert und Namensgeber der Ausstellung ist (Startzeiten). Gemeinsam schaffen wir Orte, die Nähe und Intimität mit Kunstwerken, anderen Besucher/innen, der Umgebung und der Nacht selbst zulassen, und dies im Kontext der Massenveranstaltung Museumsnacht. Im Taumel der Nacht besteht aus drei Teilen: 1) Die Ausstellung im Trikot: eine von Christopher Füllemann erschaffene Wohnung mit Kunstwerken aus Kleinbasler Privatsammlungen. 2) Eine Assemblage in der Kaserne mit Skulpturen von Füllemann sowie einem Banner (siehe Bild oben) und einer Fahne mit Bezug auf die Nachtrundgänge. 3) Die Nachtrundgänge mit Michel Massmünster (ca. 40 min). Im Rahmenprogramm: u.a. Filmabende und eine Buchvernissage (Informationen folgen). Die Besucher/innen sind eingeladen, nach der Museumsnacht in der Ausstellung zu übernachten.

Im Stiftungsrat für die neue Basler Stadtgeschichte
Das Projekt Stadt.Geschichte.Basel für eine neue Basler Kantons- und Stadtgeschichte ist gut unterwegs. Der Grosse Rat hat den Unterstützungskredit bewilligt, und die Sammlung privater Gelder läuft gut. Ich bin sehr glücklich, dass ich als Stiftungsrat das Projekt eng begleiten darf. Gemeinsam mit Dr. Andreas Burckhardt (Verwaltungsratspräsident Bâloise), Dr. Robert Labhardt (Historiker), Christoph Lanz (Verwaltungsratssekretär MCH-Group), Barbara Schneider (Alt-Regierungsrätin), Dr. Marie-Louise Stamm (Appellationsgerichtspräsidentin), Prof. em. ALMA MARTHA has asked members of the SOCIAL MUSCLE CLUB team from Berlin and Basel to come to South Africa as mentors and performance artists for the first ever Social Muscle Club in South Africa. SMC is an interactive game of participation and with sharing of performance gifts. ALMA MARTHA invited local artists to create the space and those to perform.
SMC examines our practice with urban communities in response to the question: How can we face our fears? It begins with personal fears, from facing up to asking for help to confronting stage fright, and ʻjumping over our own shadows.’ The outcome of these interactions open the idea of expanding practice to take in the urgent social and political questions of our time – issues such as inequality, social separation, disconnection and apathy. SMC asks, ‘does changing ourselves initiate change in our neighborhoods, our cities, the world?’ From this initial phase of training with one another, an underlying principle emerges: Through art, can we foster our capacity and potential?

SMC is breaking new ground - We are Neuländish! Neuländish is the gym for social muscles. This month we define and train the social muscle: Selfishness - this is about dedication, humility, trust and community. Our project: Chris Gylee, scenographer and Social Muscle Club member wishes to use the time of 15 people for five days to develop his concept for a stage. We give him 412.5 hours and try to ensure that with our support he can pursue his goal without distraction. We have created a schedule, distributed tasks, and developed a strict hierarchical system for decision-making in which Chris occupies the top position. Did it work? How did everyone feel in this situation? On Friday at 12:00 noon Chris will present the results to the director of his project, and we invite you to train your selfishness muscle together with us.

The experiment: During an intense two week working period, ten strangers are going to turn an empty house into a living organism. HAUS99 offers a three week residency in basel (30th of may to 19th of june) to you and nine other artists. You‘ll get a room in a vacant house, equipped with the bare necessities. A garden, a cellar, garages, a laydown, some money to work and live, allaround-care through the curators, a lot of liberty and a few responsibilities. Wanna move in? Performance Kunsthalle
Performance in der Kunsthalle. Das zweite Kapitel eines fortlaufenden Projektes, dass die klassische Retrospektive auf den Kopf stellt. Für dieses Kapitel führt die Basler Kunsthalle Zhana Ivanovas allererste Performance, Borrowed Splendour von 2007, wieder auf. Diese Arbeit offenbart die Grundlagen für Ivanovas wiederkehrende Verwendung von einfachen Requisiten und Handlungsanweisungen, um die alltäglichen, aber oft unsichtbaren Normen gesellschaftlichen Verhaltens aufzuzeigen. Nach einem von Zhana Ivanova geschriebenen Skript, werden die Performer_innen aufgefordert, einfache Handlungen zu vollziehen. Museumsnacht, 22 Uhr.

Pleiten, Pech und Pannen stehen im Sport für Drama und Komödie. Noch bis zum 1. Mai 2016 zeigt das Sportmuseum die skurrilsten und schönsten, die lustigsten und tragischsten Bilder aus dem Archiv des legendären Zürcher Fotografen Walter Scheiwiller (*1922). Sein Werk umfasst tausende herausragende Aufnahmen aus der Geschichte des Schweizer Sports im 20. Jahrhundert, vom Zweiten Weltkrieg bis in die 80er-Jahre. Daneben präsentiert die Ausstellung Trouvaillen aus dem Archiv der Schweizer Filmwochenschau, der Vorläuferin der Tagesschau, die als Nachrichtenformat von 1940 bis 1975 im Vorprogramm der Schweizer Kinos lief.

Social Muscle Club 2016
Die Zeit ist reif, den Social Muscle Club (SMC) in die Stadt zu holen. 2016 betreten wir die unterschiedlichsten Räume und nehmen immer neue Formen an, um immer wieder neue, heterogene Publika zu erreichen. Wir machen uns nicht nicht zuhause bequem, sondern wagen uns in verschiedene soziale Kontexte, hinaus zu den Menschen. Kernkompetenz des SMC ist es, Menschen zusammen zu bringen. Am 1. April gehts los. Wo?

2016 geht der SMC wieder auf Reisen. Wenn alles so klappt, wie wir das wollen, sind wir bald im Kunsthaus brut in Wien, im Südpol in Luzern, im Museum of Broken Relationships in Zagreb, im Ausstellungsprojekt Space Invaders IV in Helsinki und im Kulturhaus Helferei in Zürich.
